The rise of Jico, pioneers in the audio world!

In the world of audiophiles and vinyl enthusiasts, the Japanese company JICO is no stranger. With a history dating back to 1873 and a deep connection with the iconic audio company Shure, JICO has become a leading manufacturer of turntable cartridges and styli. This blog delves into the history, products, and craftsmanship of JICO, highlighting their popular J44D and J44A cartridges.

HISTORY

The origin of JICO dates back to 1873 when the company was founded near Hamasaka in Japan, specializing in the production of sewing needles for kimonos. This artisanal beginning marks the inception of a company that would adapt to changing times and technologies. In 1949, the company made a significant shift by focusing on the production of steel needles for phonograph heads, under the registered name JICO (NIPPON PRECISION JEWEL INDUSTRY CO., LTD.).

The true revolution occurred in 1966 when JICO began producing diamond needles for modern phono cartridges, resulting in a catalog of over 2,200 items for various brands. The development of Super Analogue Stylus diamonds in 1990 further solidified their reputation within the international audio community.

TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING

JICO is renowned for its entirely Japan-based production, employing traditional, handcrafted manufacturing methods. The production tools are developed in-house by JICO, highlighting their expertise and dedication to quality. With over 2,000 stylus products in its portfolio, the company specializes in reissuing enhanced versions of discontinued Shure cartridges and styli.

THE RESURRECTION OF A LEGEND

In 2016, Shure ceased production of certain cartridges and styli due to raw material availability issues. In response to market demand, JICO took over in 2018 and resumed production of Shure cartridges and styli. Particularly popular are the M44-7 cartridge and the N44-7 stylus, renowned for their generous bass and excellent tracking, as well as the WhiteLabel stylus, ideal for club use due to its strong bass and clear mid and high frequencies.

SHURE MADE BY JICO

JICO faithfully produces Shure's 'S-type' cantilever and has even adjusted the contact angle between diamond and vinyl for improved contact and tracking. The 'Improved' series offers additional protection for the stylus, while the 'DJ' series has higher tracking force for better stability.

DIAMONDS IN DETAIL

A key component in the chain of vinyl audio reproduction is the diamond that translates vibrations from the vinyl groove. JICO utilizes integrated diamonds in its styli, resulting in lower weight and more precise tracking. These diamonds are available in natural and synthetic forms, with various cutting shapes such as spherical, elliptical, and hyperelliptical.

HIGHLIGHTED: J44D/J44A CARTRIDGES

The J44D cartridge produces a balanced and solid sound, with a wide and musical audio response similar to that of the original Shure M44G cartridge. The J44A, on the other hand, offers a lively and dynamic sound, ideal for powerful bass frequencies and a smooth, balanced output reminiscent of the Shure M44-7 cartridge.

JICO's ongoing innovation and dedication to quality have established the brand as a respected name in the world of vinyl and audio. With products that exceed customer expectations and a deep appreciation for the legacy of audio quality, JICO remains a key player in the market for audiophiles and DJs. The ability to revive legendary Shure products and make its own unique contributions to the audio world ensures that JICO continues to be a brand to watch.
