What is Tracktion’s BioTek and BioTek 2?
Bringing together a powerful, innovative synthesis engine and a built-in library of sampled natural, urban and mechanical sounds, BioTek is a plugin instrument like no other. Within an intuitive single-screen interface, every preset calls up a set of clearly named macro knobs in each section (Oscillators, Filters, Effects, etc), designed specifically for that particular sound and enabling transformative hands-on control of a complex set of under-the-hood parameters, processes and modulation routings. Two ’Mana’ sliders and an XY controller let you balance and morph the four layers of each preset to create your own weird and wonderful custom patches; and when you want to get into the details, entering Edit mode reveals the full array of per-layer controls. Whether you choose to keep it simple or go deep, BioTek’s esoteric sounds and empowering workflow make it sound designer’s dream synth.
“I’m particularly excited about this edition of Sound Collective,” says Sound Collective Product Manager Jonathan Campbell. “As a producer who likes to build interesting and organic pads, Biotek is a dream come true! The first thing that grabbed me was the GUI – the mechanic for morphing between each of the oscillators is super engaging and fun to use. Obviously, it sounds great, too. You can run up to four oscillators at a time for really deep and rich sounds, and the ability to morph between them so easily means you can quickly create soundscape-like pads using automation. It comes with a ton of presets to get you going quickly, and the parameters page offers enough control for you to really edit and hone your patches. Whether you’re a sound designer or a techno producer, you’ll get some really interesting results with Biotek.”
BioTek 2 builds on the foundations laid by its predecessor, adding a host of features that take it to new heights in terms of versatility and sound. Two new oscillator types – the sawtooth-stacking Spinal Saw and audio-smashing Granular – take BioTek into previously uncharted sonic waters, while Transistor Ladder and Sallen Key low-pass filter types diversify your frequency-shaping options. Parameter automation is improved, too, and a brand new dedicated browser page plays host to 500 factory presets, including 100 custom patches from electronic music legend Richard Devine. Having downloaded the original BioTek for free, if you find yourself falling for its redoubtable charms, be sure to claim your 30% discount on BioTek 2 by 4 May.
